And unfortunately not all of them were able to make it... These are the dogs that make us question why we are in rescue. All the good we do goes out the window and we focus on the ones we couldn't save. It hurts... and puts us in a funk. Thus the late wrap-up for 2017. But we're going to tell you about our year anyhow because you care, or have/had a Vizsla from us or hope to get one Vizsla from us. This year consisted of 8mo to 9yo Vizslas. One was euthanized in our care and another after placement due to health issues. The others are doing fine and below are updates sent into us from happy families. And as always - Topo, our spokesdog pops up every now and then to help tell our story.

I never thought about the ones that don't make it... These folks never let on when they were sad - they just want to make sure we get the best homes. PERIOD. I am Topo and this is my pal Silly and we're here to tell you about Midwest Vizsla Rescue.

I'm sorry that I've not updated you on Rex. I have no excuse, only that I have always been a poor communicator. Let me tell you about my best friend, Rex. We had a very tumultuous first year, and there were a few times that I came very close to calling you to discuss returning him, but I've always believed that there is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners. With that in mind, I continued to work with him. After completing a reactive dog training class with him, I saw a significant change. As we continued to work on the training that we learned together, our bond grew. The other thing that I discovered as we have progressed through this journey is that Rex has some health issues as well. After a lot of work with a very good veterinarian, we were able to ascertain that Rex has a significant allergy problem and is subject to pancreatitis. We have found a very good food and allergy med regimen that keeps him happy, healthy, regular, and free from the ear infections, digestive problems and foot chewing that plagued his first year with me. In February of this year, I remarked to my mother that I felt that Rex had finally decided he wanted to stay. She agreed that she had also noticed the change and that she, for the first time, truly felt comfortable with him. Since then, it's been nothing but wonderful. He is a completely different dog. He knows that he is part of the family, and acts it. The greetings that I receive when I come home are 100% pure "happy Viz" (his vertical jump is almost 4 feet!) He has become the typical Velcro-Vizsla and true "fierce defender when you're behind the door/fence/window, but best friend as soon as daddy says so" Viz. He spends his days defending my mother from the outside world and his evenings wrestling with daddy. His nights are spent pushing me to the very edge of my bed until I wake up and make him move, which results in a pretty good growl :-) Rex is a fabulous dog. I am so very happy that we found each other and so grateful to you for getting us together. We will continue to have a very happy life together. Thank you again, John

Duke and his sweetie, Lucy. He is a crazy loveable and active Vizsla. My oldest son (Will) just said "Duke is great because he follows all of us around not just you mom." Our previous Vizsla Rosie was devoted to me and usually followed me. We love this dog. Brenda

I've been thinking about updating you on Bugs' progress, but haven't put fingers to keyboard. I think it's about time, with his 9th birthday coming up on May 2! It won't surprise you to know that he is doing wonderfully and we are so pleased to have him as part of our life. He LOVES running through the woods on our walks, though he will miss the snow -- which he really liked roming through as well as eating! Silly boy. He still doesn't like loud noises, but we continue to expose him from time to time so someday he may accept noise better. He put on about 10 pounds within the first month he was with us, but we've figured out the proper amounts to feed him so he doesn't always think he's hungry and he can maintain his svelte figure after he shed about five of those 10 pounds. He had 13 teeth extracted in late February, and came through that very well. His food was softened for about a week, then we gradually worked back to the dry version. Bugs is a true charmer when meeting people out in public. We were at the auto dealership for some work to be done and he charmed the mechanics, sales people, and other customers! Bugs has enriched our days and nights, with his antics, his "kisses", his funny dances that he does when excited, and his gentlemanly ways when he meets anyone who will pet him. Thanks to Midwest Vizsla Rescue and you two ladies for entrusting us with this wonderful dog. Thanks also for all the work you do on behalf of the Vizslas that you place in carefully selected homes. We all know what a wonderful breed this is, and you have such a unique part in making sure that unwanted Vizslas have new beginnings where they are loved, cared for, and where they can thrive. We often think about Daffy and hope he came through his heartworm treatment well and is doing wonderfully with his new family. I really didn't expect to write such a long message, but there's a lot to be said! The short version is: "Thanks for Bugs, and keep up the good work!" Lori and Leo Allaire, and Bugs Allaire too!

A year ago the heartbreak from having our Vizsla put down healed a big bunch because we brought Duke into our home. The trash is locked, we can’t leave food on the counter, we have to take lots of walks, but we are always met with sloppy wet kisses and never have to sit on the sofa alone. He is s Vizsla in every way. We love our Duke. He played in the leaf pile this weekend and the only picture Kelly wanted for homecoming was a picture with Duke Brenda & Family

Wrap Up With Topo....

Our Midwest Vizsla Rescue Team is simply the best! All Red Heads coming thru their program live in the homes of their foster families. We become "their dogs" until we are ready to become someone else's. Some of us are easier than others. Some of us don't make it - and are held at the end just like these folks are there for their own dogs about to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Our Team consists of Barb Blaylock, John Markham, Jennifer Schawang, Linda Pickett, Jim Bowen, Tony Simcic, Jessica Provost and Meghan Tallman. Other folks are scattered about and step up as needed. They give of their time and treasure. But we couldn't do it without your help as well! Consider making a tax deductible donation to help the Vizslas who are unable to help themselves.

NEEDS

Ad Sponsors: We run monthly ads in the Kansas City Star. They are a great way to educate folks about our breed. If you'd like to sponsor an ad - they run $32 per month. Checks can be mailed to MVR PO BOX 366 Emporia, Kansas 66801 or you can donate via Paypal on our website under How You Can Help http://midwestvizslarescue.org/how-you-can-help.html
In-kind needs: Blankets, collars, leads, seat belt harnesses, wire crates, treats, food etc... Think of what your dog needs - we do too!
Donations of general support: Checks can be mailed to MVR PO BOX 366 Emporia, Kansas 66801 or you can donate via Paypal on our website under How You Can Help http://midwestvizslarescue.org/how-you-can-help.html
Giftcards: to Target or WalMart are always needed (Not all of us are close to PetSmart).

SPECIAL THANKS -
My year end wrap up reminds me of those who are there for us in so many ways. We appreciate the shelters and owners who take the time to find Midwest Vizsla Rescue. We thank you, our adopters and supporters for your continued belief in our program. We thank the foster families who allow our team to take time away from their families, jobs etc.. and transport, foster and rehab Vizslas who have nowhere else to go - even during the holidays. But most of all we thank the Team's OWN Vizslas who share their owners with our rescues. They know these Vizslas need help and go above and beyond "when duty calls".

Please join our Facebook page if you haven't already - Midwest Vizsla Rescue - we post there frequently. (https://www.facebook.com/MidwestVizslaRescue/?ref=hl). We hold mini fundraisers there as well as keep you updated on what happens throughout the year.

HUGS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

From Senator last year:
So there you have it. That's a lot of dogs this year. Please help them if you can. These are good folks , trying to do a good thing. It's not for me - I'm doing fine. It's for the Vizslas like me - who through no fault of their own find themselves homeless and in a bad situation. I hope I'm the spokesdog for 2016, but you know, I'm getting up there in years and may not be the one telling their story next year. But unfortunately there are always more like me. Either way, our stories will "get told" - Midwest Vizsla Rescue will make it happen. We matter and they care. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! Love, The Senator.

With tears, I must tell you that Senator did not make it to this year. But he has handed the torch to another great rescue who promises to carry on in Senator Otis's pawsteps.

And so it goes on.....

To date in 2016 we have taken in 18 dogs:
Zeke, Buddy, Dini, Juno, Shannon, Daffy, Bugs, Duke, Ophelia, Bella, Baylee, Trip, Ginger, Izzy, Willy, Nessa, Devo and Winston. Four were heartworm positive, Three were seniors over 7yo. One was a Cocker Spaniel (don't ask...). Two found their way to us through the death of their owners. The highest paid out on a dog this year was $1300 (HW pos and complications with injection site post treatment). We have great fosters: John Markham, Barb Blaylock, Tony Simcic, Linda Pickett, Jim Bowen, Meghan Tallman, Jessica Provost and others in our region who step up when needed.
We make a great team, but couldn't do it without your help! All donations are tax deductible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Squirt and Berton
Here is a photo and update of Squirt and Berton with Melinda from the mountains here in NM. Squirt is doing well considering his age. He is hard of hearing now and moves pretty slowly, however he seems to be very happy, always sitting with his paws crossed with a smile on his face.

Berton is doing well too, although he really misses his buddy Vizzy who we had to say goodbye to on Jul 9 due to a serious disease with his liver and spleen. We still cannot believe that Vizzy has moved onto the Rainbow Bridge. He was the leader of the pack.

Little Squirt is not doing so well. Last night he started to fall over when walking and walking a circle. He may have had a stroke, or I am really hoping he is just sore from two walks yesterday.

Squirt is in good spirits, resting at home with us. He can barely walk though. We have Squirt on Rimadyl. As you know he is getting up there in years. We have watched him really enjoy his later years though and this is a rather sudden turn. Hopefully a temporary one. I know there will come a day... and that is a good reminder to love him as much as possible now.

He is doing better today. It is the classic arthritic hip in old dogs that make it hard for him to get up, coupled with wrist issues in the front. Tomorrow I take him to our vet who is going to use a "laser" treatment she has had good luck with on the joints of older dogs. (do you have any experience with this type of treatment?).
He seemed to be a lot happier today. We are trading off staying home with Squirt to help him get up. As you know is he is a real trooper. Once he does get up and takes a few steps he starts running around :-).
Thanks for checking in and I will keep you posted

He is trying to catch a roadrunner in the backyard this morning .... beep beep!
The laser treatment must be working, we have really seen a huge improvement. Squirt smiles pretty big while he "runs" on his daily hikes

Bruno napping, Mud Puppy, with a weird friend and Halloween....
BRUNO
Well, we have had Bruno 3 years now and he is 5-1/2. He has matured into a very sweet, loving, gentle dog. He lost most of the spooky attributes he once had. Holding at 56-57 lbs he looks great! Still walking 2-4 miles a day off leash. He holds much closer and stays on the trial more these days. Starting to get a little bit of gray under his chin. :-)) We love him dearly!

MURPHYY & PIPER
Murphy is doing great! And Piper is still with us- at age 14. She is still going strong, and Murphy loves her best of all creatures on this planet. I think she really loves him, too:) We are back in MN now, and I have a work from home job, so the pups enjoy laying in the sunshine all day while I work. Great to hear from you!

Buddy hoping for something to fall...
BUDDY
Buddy is pretty happy. He is still bonded w. my neighbors. Better w. me. He always knows where I am at and will come and find me. Ray and Buddy are very much alike and go for long walks twice a day. This is a very doggy neighborhood and everybody knows Buddy and he has made friends w. several neighbors and yesterday approached another neighbor - which is huge for him. Rita, Ray’s wife, Sofia and I walk part of the way w. them then come home. She is 15. Buddy’s coat is in great shape and he is healthy looking. He still thinks he is a puppy and jumped off the retaining wall last week and wrenched his shoulder. Aspirin for a few days and good as new. He has his toys and sleeps w. them, greets Ray at the door every morning w. a different toy. We are worried about what Buddy will do when Sofia is no longer with us. But told you that last time. Celebrated Buddy’s birthday in Feb. cake and ice-cream and a new toy.

My friend John and Buddy get along well. One thing we are noticing is that when he is in the back yard, he always watches the back door. I am always out there or somebody is. If whoever heads toward the door Buddy beats them. He does not want to be left alone. He likes his walks and knows his way home.

RUFUS
Our Rufus just keeps getting better every day and he keeps getting more handsome. He’s over 13 years old and hiked over 300 miles this past summer mostly at high altitude. What a champ. I thank you daily for bringing the two of us together. Also, he has still not had a bad day in 13 years. Who among us can say that?

Picture
Ophelia now Gypsy and Nessa now Rose
HUNTER: Meghan, this is Rip Rutkowski--Had "Kansas" as my first Vizsla then adopted "Hunter" about 11 yrs ago. Well, he and I are growing old together and he is my best bud. He started getting those fat globules but 1 looked strange and growing fast. I had it removed and it proved to be near the size of a tennis ball. All is well, but the Doc gave me some Pain pills and I was just not going to give Hunter some narcotics. Story here, but here's my tip. Doc & I felt it was cancer--no testing, but felt pretty sure because of rapid growth. My thought was to give him Natural stuff to fight any possibility of cancer. I eat eggs--he eats eggs/meat (High Protein)Big tip is BONE MARROW SOUP/BROTH. THIS INCREASED IMMUNE SYSTEM AND HE SEEMS LIKE MORE ENERGY AND A PUPPY AGAIN AT 11 YRS. Now he has about an 8 inch scar but I feel I have increased his lifetime a couple of years. Big tip to try Bone broth for dogs--all natural. I bought bones with marrow at HyVee and threw them in a crock pot, filled with water. That's it. He is family. We may not hunt, but we go fishing together and everywhere else. He allows me to drive him around and stay in the same house with him. Rip

PAPI: Happy as can be. Sweet dog we love him. We were thinking of getting another dog so he has a pal, and also it would help us when he ages. We check your site all the time. He goes for walks on the beach every weekend, one hour in the morning and long walks after work in the park on trails that he runs on. He loves carrots. Hugs back - and we think of you often and are thankful for your work. Stuart and Michael

BRYCE: I love the Vizsla breed, my fur buddy was my companion and therapy buddy. He was with me for 10 years and on June 28, he started having signs of an illness. After two weeks of staying with his Vet, I was told to take him to the Missouri University Veterinary Hospital. On July 15, 2016, I took him to the hospital and was told that he had an aggressive cancer throughout his lymph nodes and he had a collapsed area in his intestines. I was told he was very ill and surgery was not an option for him per the Vet at MU Veterinary Hospital. So with a broken heart and unconditional love I had to let him go to the Rainbow Bridge. I miss him so very much and I am so full of grief and have cried everyday, my loss is endless. I had the Best Dog and he was my everything, Bryce gave me so much love, wonderful memories and he is missed greatly.
Thank you

And last but not least - the Senator Otis - missed and loved by the Baggio's and Midwest Vizsla Rescue

Our New Spokesdog - Topo

The good Senator has passed the title of Midwest Vizsla Rescue Spokesdog onto Topo. He has been our poster pup as you can see (left) but feels he has some big paw pads to fill (right).

A Word From Topo:

If you all knew how hard this Midwest Vizsla Rescue Team worked, you would say - are they nuts?
Please - write a check, offer to help transport, foster, adopt. These are some of the best folks you are ever gonna come across. My brothers and I were SO LUCKY www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASMVuJYgmvc when they took us on. I couldn't even stand up - and look at me now! We are a 501c-3 - so donations are tax deductible. If you go to our How You Can Help page on our website www.midwestvizslarescue.org you can donate via Paypal monthly or immediately. Our heartworm positive dogs are fine now, but very expensive to treat. Then they feed us, vet us, buy toys, blankets (usually at thrift shops) and chew/treats for us. This group networks with other rescues to buy in bulk, write grants - they are good stewards of our donations. So think of the 18 this year and those that are sure to come in afterward. Vizslas like me need Midwest Vizsla Rescue and we need you!

<![CDATA[THE YEAR OF THE OLD ONES 2015]]>Mon, 21 Dec 2015 03:36:55 GMThttp://midwestvizslarescue.org/blog/the-year-of-the-old-ones-2015
Have you heard what Midwest Vizsla Rescue has been up to this year?

My name is Senator. That’s me on the left. I was lost, and discovered on a dock, shivering. Yep, believe it or not, Midwest Vizsla Rescue folks came down to the Lake of the Ozarks to pick me up. I was old, cold, wet and scared. Look at me now! I have a fabulous family and couldn’t be any happier!!!

But this is not about me…. This is about all the rescues of 2015 and updates from good folks like yourselves who let them know how we are doing. They want to share with you our year! Make yourself comfortable and read a bit….

Picture
This is Lacey and Dasher Hovi. They are having a ball together in Ohio. They came into rescue separately but were fostered by Jeff down in Tulsa. Lacey went to live with Hovi's first, and then thought she needed a pal. Might as well be her running buddy Dasher, who Jeff was also fostering. They are doing GREAT!

Picture
Topo lives with our MVR Co-Chair - Barb Blaylock. We never thought he'd grow to normal size (see the Five Brothers film on our website www.midwestvizslarescue.org) It was debatable he was even going to make it. And NOW look at him! His name comes from the old Ed Sullivan mouse character Topo Gigio.

Picture
Chloe is great. We had our vet bring her vaccinations up to date and chip inserted in early December 2014. At that time she weighed 39 pounds. I estimate she now weighs around 50 pounds and has grown longer and taller with beautiful conformation. She has managed to chew the arms of two antique chairs and suffers from separation anxiety when we kennel her for short periods. I have twice had to reinforce her kennel with cable ties. We should have renamed her Shadow as she follows me everywhere, even when I mowed the yard this week. She is a loving dog and enjoys love and attention and especially looks forward to the feeding ritual.
Here are pictures today on her one year anniversary. We brought her to her forever home on 22 Nov 2014. She has brought so much joy into our lives, thank you for your help. Jessica feels she needs a little brother. Bill & Jessica

This is Wrigley - formerly Codi from Emporia, Ks. He lives in St. Louis with the Grunst family. He's an obedience school graduate and loves to ride in the car. He has changed the Grunst family's life!

And then there is Dallas and Marcia Finch from St. Louis. FABULOUS supporters and owners of several Midwest Vizsla Rescue dogs!!!!!

Annie Bayles has the life of leisure in her family RV. While recovering from Valley Fever, she is lounging on the sofa... I think she needs another pillow or two! She lives in Tuscon with Gerry and Penny Bales but travels extensively with them.

This is Mac
Our daughter received a second head injury in October right before we got Mac (who was to be her running partner). It was pretty severe and was topped off by a huge natural gas explosion in our town that rocked our house.and our daughter's head took another hit. So with that, we've been on a whole new path - no proms or graduations for us. I was worried about having a Vizsla given that we went from people who run every day to people who visited doctors and hospitals every day. I could not have been more wrong. He has been such a gift to our daughter and an inspiration for her return to running. Funny how the universe just works things out. He is patient and loving when she's in pain. They are best friends. We live on an acre and a half with lots of critters he can chase and a pool. He was a reluctant swimmer for a whole summer and then one day at the dog park someone threw a stick (as we had so many times previously) and another dog went to get it and PRESTO! He became Micheal Phelps! From then on, he swims at the dog park and in our pool and loves the water! He's been so good for all of us and we've tried to be a great home for him! He's not been able to kick separation anxiety, as we've read with so many Vizslas, so we just take him with - everywhere and anywhere we can! We've gone through quite a number of dog beds on the occasions when we absolutely couldn't bring him along... oh, and one Blackberry, brand new - yummy!! :)
He is a happy guy and we feel truly blessed to have him as a family member. He weighs 68 lbs now, but is still lean as can be - just a very big Vizsla. He was only 18 months when we got him (although we thought he was older), so he still had some growing to do. He gets lots of attention for being "gorgeous" at the dog park and everywhere we go, but many are surprised at his size! Thank you, Meghan and Barb, for choosing us for Mac. We couldn't love him any more than we do! Thank you Pilots & Paws for getting him to us and for letting me ride along, We are grateful to you all. Mac is the best thing our daughter has going right now - he's her friend, training partner, shoulder to cry on and clown that makes her laugh. We are so grateful to you all! With love, Lisa, Quinna & Mac

Picture
Josie is a sweetpea that is now in Lawrence, Kansas with her folks - the Rogers!!!!!

Meet BRUNO! Bruno is doing fabulous up in Chicago area with his family who helped him through hip surgery! He is quite the traveler and has some great pals he travels with!
Moki is doing quite well these days! He became a fence jumper but that has calmed down. He is a great swimmer and loves the off leash dog park!
Ike is now living with the Proffitt's and turned out to be quite the bird dog for the family as well as a great buddy!
Ace Bates has now hit double digits and is living well in Edmonton, Oklahoma!
Louie lives with his two kids and mom and dad. Santa brought them matching pajamas last year and tho he lives in Kansas, he looks to be a Mizzouie Louie!
Picture
Daisy came from a Kansas commercial breeder. She is used to the comfy life now! Daisy belongs to Mea down in Tulsa. Such a little love. She is sunning with her buddy George.

This is Finnegan - from a mix litter we took in from Oklahoma. He is living in Kansas City with the Tutton family. So sweet....

How Do We Say Goodbye.....

Pudge Dean - Owned and loved by Sherry and Alan Dean.. We still miss him so much and as a result of his passing, our home has gotten very quiet, with much of the happiness he brought gone.. It’s hard to sometimes appreciate what a beloved pet brings but that is something that should never be taken for granted. I sense he still visits us sometimes, probably to make sure we are ok, which he so good about – making sure everyone else was ok…. Thanks for getting him to us when you did – he was a wonderful boy!!
Maggie Hall - Owned and Loved by Allen Hall All was great until almost three years ago when my wife was suddenly diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of liver cancer resulting in Joyce's death on 2 March 2012. During Joyce's chemo and radiation and during hospice (10 days) Maggie was such a source of peace and comfort for us. She was always best cuddled in besides Joyce or I and following Joyce's death she was my "rock." Maggie was euthanized in my arms and I know she went straight into Joyce's arms on the other side. I thought this would be easier to write after the passage of some time, but it wasn't. Thank you so much for connecting Maggie and Joyce and I for that period of time. I've been telling friends, "I'm between dogs, now."

Rusty Foust - Owned and loved by the Foust family. We adopted Red (changed to Rusty) about 5 years ago from John and the club. We unfortunately lost Rusty last month to cancer (he was only 7) and our family is heartbroken. Rusty because so much a part of our family and was always willing to please, go for a run with us or snuggle. He was a great family dog and we miss him.
Picture
Bertie Tsui Owned and loved by KittyTsui. Bertie was such a special soul. it is w/ great regreat to tell you that Bertie died tonight.Tears ....... Run strong, run free, my beloved. I will love you forever & then beyond.

Katie Nelson - Owned and loved by the Nelson Family. Katie was most famous for how long she could walk around the Nelson backyard on her hind legs to show the birds who was boss! She was fast and quite the huntress but was a love bug when inside. Rest in peace Katie. You are missed.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This year 32 Vizslas came through our program: Abby, Belle, Moki, Chance, Codi, Cooper, Copper, Mack, Dasher, Devo, Dixie, Fancy, Flash, Ginger, Harley, Kane, Lacey, Lady, Lily, Nessa, Oklahoma Joe, Avery, Oliver, Ricoh, Ruby, Shiloh, Sosa, Taffee, Teddy, Tully, Wendy and Winston.

Of those - 8 were senior dogs (over 7yo) and of those - half were in double digits! As one might expect, with all these seniors, we had extraordinary medical bills this year. Oklahoma Joe came in non weight bearing due to horrific arthritis. He and Avery had gastrointestinal issues when they came in. Others just needed a good "workup" before we adopted out so we knew there were no issues to worry the new owners and if there are, we want to fully disclose. We have a female on her way in next week with possible kidney stones. At times we have an outside behaviorist consult with us. We don't have enough fosters, so we have had to board more dogs this year than in years past until room opens up.

We were able to help 5 of them via direct placement from the owner (mix or no room available) but were able to help with 3 mix pups this year. One came in and back out - family missed him too much so happy ending. One transferred to another group due to lack of fosters and they had possible applicants. The others were direct adoptions with 3 still available. We do not adopt out over the holidays but will pick back up January 4th.

NEEDS:
We still run our ads in the Kansas City Star. They are a great way to educate folks about our breed. If you'd like to sponsor an ad - they run $29 per month and can be paid through check or Paypal.
In-kind needs: Blankets, collars, leads, harnesses, wire crates
Donations of general support - Checks can be mailed to MVR PO BOX 366 Emporia, Kansas 66801 or you can donate via Paypal on our website under How You Can Help http://midwestvizslarescue.org/how-you-can-help.html
Giftcards to Target or WalMart are always needed (always near our homes where we might not be close to PetSmart).

Year end reminds us of those who are there for us in so many ways. We appreciate the shelters and owners who take the time to find us. We thank you, our adopters and supporters for your continued belief in our program. We thank our families who allow (put up with) us to take time away from our own dogs and them to transport, foster and rehab rescues who have nowhere else to go. But most of all we thank our OWN Vizslas who share us with the rescues. They know these dogs need help and go above and beyond "when duty calls".

Please join our Facebook page if you haven't already - Midwest Vizsla Rescue (https://www.facebook.com/MidwestVizslaRescue/?ref=hl). We hold mini fundraisers on there as well as keep you updated on what happens throughout the year.

Best wishes to you and your red ones in the coming New Year!
Meghan Barb John Kelli Tamara Kimberly

<![CDATA[2014 Year in Review]]>Tue, 02 Dec 2014 01:06:07 GMThttp://midwestvizslarescue.org/blog/2014-year-in-review GREETINGS!

Wow, what a year it has been! Finally, after wrestling with the IRS application for nearly ten months, Midwest Vizsla Rescue is officially a 501c-3! It’s been a long journey and I want to thank our Midwest Vizsla Rescue team for hanging in there when I was ready to throw in the towel! Huge THANK YOU to – Barb Blaylock, Kimberly Deyoung, Nancy Hintz, John Markham, Staci Rivas, Tamara Wise, Kelli Aitken and Jeffrey Noftsger.

While 2014 has been a relatively slow year with 21 dogs through our program, it has been an expensive one. This was the year of the older female Vizsla…. You’ll read more about one of our girls - Riley, our grand dame, below.

We are thankful for the shelters who notify us of Vizslas they take in, the owners who seek us out to turn-in, our foster families who open their hearts and homes and to our adopting families. We want to thank our rescue angels who kept us going this year. We couldn't have done it without you and do our best to be good stewards of your gifts. Please remember your red dogs when making end of year donations. Thank you so much for your support! We are truly grateful.

Have a great holiday season!

Updates From Former Fosters

GUNNER
Picture
Picture
In December of last year, we received a dear, middle aged Vizsla male from northern Missouri – an owner turn-in. With 3 children, the family no longer had time for Gunner - so they turned him in to Midwest Vizsla Rescue. He stayed with me a few weeks. This guy was special – a turnkey dog. Several applicants inquired but no one felt like a “love connection”. I told Gunner we would find him the best home ever – the same line I give to all the rescues that come through my house. But for this gentleman – it had to be “just right”. January came and went and then came February…. And then came Sue and Kent Bruns. PERFECT! Sue and I had several conversations about Gunner and we agreed he was the one for them and their Vizsla, Sandy. After working out the logistics from northern Iowa, the Dinner Bell in Eagleville, Missouri became the point of rendezvous…. When Sue pulled up and hopped out – Gunner knew she was “his”. Others had pulled in/out and he paid no mind, but when Sue pulled up he sat up and checked her out through the window. We went through the normal passing of the dog chatter, the signing of the paperwork and then it was time to say goodbye. No problem for Gunner – “thanks and see ya later bye”…. He had a new mom now. Sue kept in regular touch with us with updates and photos. He was in love with them and they with him. Then came some coughing… In August he was diagnosed with blastomycosis, a very serious fungal issue that settled in his lungs. Not many dogs survive. He took multiple antibiotics. Some helped for a while and others not at all. He seemed to be making strides. Sue and I keeping in touch through texting. Maybe…. Gunner took a turn for the worse in September and the decision to let him go was made. He traveled to the Rainbow Bridge on September 23rd. It’s safe to say the best part of his life was the last few months with the Bruns. Thank you Sue and Kent for finally giving our boy his true home. Godspeed Gunner. We’ll see you at the bridge.

RILEY
Picture
9 year old Riley came to us in late May as an owner surrender. She is quite spunky and loves to snuggle....as most V's do! Early on she turned up one day with a golf ball sized mass in her upper lip. Given the summer season we first thought she may have been stung or bitten by some summer critter. Once the vet examined her it was determined she had not been bit but because of the location of the "mass" it needed to be removed and while she was under she had some other fatty tumors removed as well. This girl was a little bit of a frankenvizsla for a while but it didn't get her down and she healed well from that. Later in the summer, as she was transitioning foster homes, she started to show signs of being in heat. Not all that unusual except that she had been spayed many years prior!! After a months worth of tests and exams and a very light heat cycle it was determined that she had retained a very small portion of an ovary at the time she was spayed. She had been around two bitches in heat just prior to starting her cycle which is what we think caused her to have the heat cycle. She handled it very well and that was that. Well, that is, until she had a slightly sprained tail from clowning around with her foster siblings. The sprain was easily treated but the referred pain down to her mid tail (she had a full tail) bothered her and, as dogs will do, she licked it....and licked it...and licked it. This tail lesion has become Riley's biggest obstacle (even over her separation anxiety). She went through cold laser therapy treatments, wore every cone type apparatus in the book and was sedated for periods of time to allow her tail to heal. Although progress was made it was slow, slow, slow. In the midst of healing, the grand day came that she found her perfect people, Lori and Steve Kaufman! Not scared off by any of Riley's issues or her age, they have welcomed her into her forever home and we all feel blessed! She deserves it, as they all do! Unfortunately Riley's tail did not heal and had to be amputated above the sore leaving her with what looks like a common Vizsla length dock. She did very well during the procedure but the urge to lick is still very strong. The Kaufman's are working with Riley every day to see that her incision heals and that the drama of the tail can be left behind. What a Sweet Pea!

What IS a VIZ WHIZZ!!??

Midwest Vizsla Rescue has been, for the past two years or so, the grateful and lucky recipient of funds raised by two separate but similar events held "across the pond." Have you ever heard of a Viz Whizz? It isn't a dog show or a hunt test....no, a Viz Whizz is all about Vizzies whizzing about while their people mingle and share the love of the breed....and end up raising a good amount of money for various Vizsla rescue organizations. The London Viz Whiz was the first event that Midwest Vizsla Rescue was supported by. Attached below is a wonderful article written by Susanne Pope giving a true taste, pics included, of what is looks like to be at a Viz Whizz! Next, we were supported by yet another grand event, The Scottish Mega Whizz 2014, organized by Felicity Butters. We asked her to describe the event for us and have also included some pictures from the event! Looks like a vizzie wild time!!

"How do I describe the chaos of my Mega Whizz ? It started a long time ago in an effort to see my puppies growing up, a relaxed way of chatting over probs etc. It then grew legs as friends wanted to join in and got crazy !! Someone challenged me to host the biggest gathering of Vizzies ever - of course I have and for several years the numbers are growing Primarily it is about fun for Vizzies and owners but once you get folk together who love Vizzies, it is an ideal opportunity to raise funds for Vizzies in need. Nowadays, it has become a whole weekend and for others a whole week of fun. I organise drunken chaos on the Saturday night, food and pub quiz. Sunday is the official Whizz, starting with coffee and shortbread and waiting for our 'piper' to start the walk. This is a zooooom through the fabulous Carmichael Estate, an opportunity for doggies to 'dip' in the pond at Pond Cottage then on to Deer Park where they can socialise and zoom to their 'hearts content'. Meanwhile, back at base, we are BBQing like crazy to feed these hungry folk - venison, lamb, chicken, beef and pork, all raised on the estate, add to that fabulous salads, deserts - who could ask for more ? We have loads of stalls selling lovely things for Vizzies and owners. The highlight of the day is the auction, loads of stuff but autioned by our wonderful, hilarious auctioneer, Ryan McDonald who could sell sand to the Arabs !! In summing up, it is bloody hard work, I am now working on next years Whizz in an effort to ease the work. I try to put 'mahoosive' amounts of fun in which makes folk happy to spend money. So far this has worked. It gives me huge pleasure to be able to help Viz Rescue in any part of the world."-Felicity Butters

We are thankful for for all of the Vizsla peeps near and far who help us help the red heads of our hearts who need the support of rescue to get on to their best life!!! A heartfelt thanks to the London Viz Whizz and Scottish Mega Viz Whizz events and all of those who made it possible!!

WHY RESCUE?

Picture
At the time we publish this blog – we are waiting to see if someone claims this old boy. He was found hungry and scared on a boat dock in Sunrise Beach, Lake Ozark, Missouri. No one knows how long he’d been there. He’s in a shelter now, waiting for his owner to claim him (highly doubtful) or to be turned over to us. We’ve already given permission to move forward with heartworm testing. If he’s negative, he’ll be vetted and we’ll pick up this weekend. He was thought to be around 15yo, but we’re thinking around 11 – 12….. We have two families interested in this senior statesman from the great state of Missouri. We’re now calling him Senator and his next stop is to a groomer to be bathed and work on those nails…. Then we’ll see who will be the lucky family to get Senator for the last years of his life.

Many folks ask us how can you do rescue? Isn’t it hard? How do you give them up? The sad part of this is every dog that comes through Midwest Vizsla Rescue is a “ Senator”. No matter if they are a pup or an oldster, each one has a story to tell. Our job is to get them ready for their forever home. Some need to stay longer than others as they need more confidence and training. Others are truly pass through dogs and are just grateful and happy to be somewhere with someone who loves them. And every once in a while we have one that doesn’t make it (health or temperament) and the humane thing to do is to bless them and send them on to the bridge... THAT is what is hard on us… Yes, it’s hard to let them go after you’ve nursed and rehabbed a Vizsla, but there is no better feeling than knowing when you’ve made a great placement – a great love connection – between dog and owner…..

We’ve tried to keep our adoption fee the same as the last few years although our adoption donations do not cover all our expenses. As a 501, our insurance runs nearly $1,400 a year – which is nearly four adoptions! We appreciate your thinking of our redheads when making your end of year donations. You can send through our Paypal button or mail to the address below.

Again, thank you so much for helping us help the “Senators”, who through no fault of their own, end up in rescue.

<![CDATA[Tail Waggin' News]]>Thu, 30 Jan 2014 21:54:01 GMThttp://midwestvizslarescue.org/blog/tail-waggin-news Dear Vizsla Friends :

Welcome to our new blog!

Based on the culmination of 20+ years experience in rescue, we proudly announce the creation of our new Vizsla rescue organization - Midwest Vizsla Rescue (MVR). Midwest Vizsla Rescue is registered as a nonprofit in Missouri and Kansas, and has applied for 501 (c) (3) status.

We are grateful for Show Me Vizsla Club’s support over the years. However, as is the natural evolution of every organization, original intent of the founders and current interpretation of the board creates divergent paths – where the best interests of both parties is best served by a parting of the ways. Now, the interests of those supporting Vizsla rescue and those dogs in need can be laser focused. Those with other interests can be served by the SMVC.

Check out our new website www.midwestvizslarescue.org and join our newsletter list! Join our FB page https://www.facebook.com/MidwestVizslaRescue ! We always need people willing to foster and help with transport, so if you feel inclined to help, you can contact any of our team below.

While we had funds in our rescue account when we left SMVC, we were unable to take all the funds raised for the the purpose of rescue. We began all over again and hope the designated funds you helped us raise will be disbursed to a well deserving 501 (c) (3) who can use the funds for rescue to abide by the original intent of your donation.

We realize we need to raise funds as our adoption donations do not cover all our expenses. Insurance alone runs nearly $1,400 a year. We appreciate your thinking of our redheads when making your end of year donations. You can send through our Paypal button or mail to:

The founding members of SMVC are thrilled to finally achieve our goal of establishing a separate Vizsla Rescue organization which ensures the continued support of Vizsla Rescue. THANK YOU. It’s been a long journey and we wish Show Me Vizsla Club all the luck they deserve!

UPDATES

FROM

OUR FAMILIES

Picture
Rufus is doing great - he and Bridget are living together without issue and even catch a nap on the bed with one of us on Sundays. After working with our vet - we discovered Rufus has some allergies. One OTC 25 mg Benadryl each day has made a huge difference. No more ooky eyes, the snoring is almost non-existant and he’s much calmer - the anxiety over every little thing is over. We were curious to see how he would react to Christmas and the tree - after a few sniffs he decided it wasn't interesting and never bothered a thing. Even Christmas morning he was more interested in sleeping. See picture #1. Santa brought a new holiday hedgehog which is now the fav toy. See picture #2. He still continues to amaze us - it feels like he's been in the family forever. Hope all is well with you - Happy New Year. The Ewton’s

I attached a couple of pics... Since Diva had a mild seizure from a flash
some years ago, she won't put up for picture taking under any circumstances.
I tried to sneak this picture of her...but she knew what was coming. Best shot I could get. Other pic is Jaspar. We were on the beach at Long Island Sound (about 2 miles from my house) on January 1, 2012. It's been an amazingly warm winter.
Many thanks!!

I just wanted to thank you again for letting us adopt Doc. We have had him a year now. A year ago today we did an up and back to St. Louis to pick him up.
We've had a great time together. He's a character. He has such a friendly and loving personality and he is so much fun to be with.
Thanks again.

It's been thirty days - today - since we met and brought Sam to O'Fallon. In a word, he's ours and won't be coming back to KC except to visit. We couldn't be happier with him. He gives more to us than we can ever give him. Sam found a girl friend at the dog park; would you believe a greyhound? Kay is none to happy with me as I got Sam a matching NY Yankees collar, leash and name tag. Kay's family in KC asked why the Yankees - besides being my favorite baseball team - the Yankees are winners and so is Sam. Congrats you all out did yourselves with Sam. Again, thanks ever so much! John, Kay and Sarah Greenwell

Meghan--I thought I'd share this picture of Bettie from last weekend. She really loves hanging outside in the yard with us. Bettie is doing quite well. In cooler weather she has enjoyed running with me and she especially enjoys running on trails. We just had her into the vet and she received a
clean bill of health. I can't tell you how much we love her, she is so precious. We hope you are having a great year, Bettie sends some vizsla kisses. L

Staci & Meghan,
Lucy is on her way home!!! She made her way over 30 BLOCKS south of our house to a family near 170th & Antioch. My sister just picked her up and sent the attached pic. She said she’s tired but totally fine – the family took excellent care of her!!! So very thankful to have her back!!! Feeling unbelievably BLESSED right now. Yes, we learned our lesson. Getting her chipped ASAP!! (Although it shouldn’t be a problem b/c I’m NOT letting her outside to go potty unsupervised EVER again…..)

I am so blessed she is in my life. I will love & cherish her until the day she crosses the Rainbow Bridge. This Rescue Girl from your rescue will be with her Forever Mom forever! Yes, even now I'm crying, but it is tears of joy & immense gratitude for Kansas City Kia/ Meggie Too2 in my life. Her Spirit, her love, her loyalty, her spunk, her playfulness, her velcro-ness (!) & SO MUCH MORE. I am SO grateful for every minute I have w/ her. God bless my Meggie. May she live long & strong. May angels watch over her, may she be guarded by dragons. God bless Vizslas in America & all over the world. And God bless all those wonderful folk all over the country who do the Work of Rescue!

Dear Meghan,
After I talked to you I headed to the store and bought some mineral oil. I gave her almost 3 cc's of mineral oil.

Dorothy is just now telling me (10:30pm) that when I left, Stella went outside looking for me and stayed outside for about 10 minutes.

So I went hunting with my flashlight and YEA, I found fresh dog poop.

So poor Stella got some mineral oil after she pooped. Oh well, I am just glad she is ok. I will keep a watch out for her tomorrow. It is suppose to rain so she and I will probably not go to the farm.

She loves the outdoors and is just a beautiful dog. Today she was out ran me while I was driving the mule or 4X4 utility vehicle.

I did not realize she had been a rescue for so long. I noticed the date on the Holden Animal ticket and it was in the end of July.
Did you know that someone marked her ear? This is a quality dog. I do not think she had much interaction with kids. She does not like being confined such as in a vehicle. She gets car sick. She would rather run beside the truck or mule than ride. At first I had a hard time in getting her in the car or truck but now she associates the vehicles with going to the farm and now will get in the vehicles on her own.

A part of me would like to find her original home simply because I know she must miss her family.
She is so much fun, and gets into everything. She is a natural born hunter.
Two days ago I got her to take a nap with me on the couch after a long day outside. I loved it.
Thank you for Stella.
Sincerely,
Mike
