GREETINGS!
Wow, what a year it has been! Finally, after wrestling with the IRS application for nearly ten months, Midwest Vizsla Rescue is officially a 501c-3! It’s been a long journey and I want to thank our Midwest Vizsla Rescue team for hanging in there when I was ready to throw in the towel! Huge THANK YOU to – Barb Blaylock, Kimberly Deyoung, Nancy Hintz, John Markham, Staci Rivas, Tamara Wise, Kelli Aitken and Jeffrey Noftsger.

While 2014 has been a relatively slow year with 21 dogs through our program, it has been an expensive one. This was the year of the older female Vizsla…. You’ll read more about one of our girls - Riley, our grand dame, below.
We are thankful for the shelters who notify us of Vizslas they take in, the owners who seek us out to turn-in, our foster families who open their hearts and homes and to our adopting families. We want to thank our rescue angels who kept us going this year. We couldn't have done it without you and do our best to be good stewards of your gifts. Please remember your red dogs when making end of year donations. Thank you so much for your support! We are truly grateful.
Have a great holiday season!

Updates From Former Fosters
GUNNER
In December of last year, we received a dear, middle aged Vizsla male from northern Missouri – an owner turn-in. With 3 children, the family no longer had time for Gunner - so they turned him in to Midwest Vizsla Rescue. He stayed with me a few weeks. This guy was special – a turnkey dog. Several applicants inquired but no one felt like a “love connection”. I told Gunner we would find him the best home ever – the same line I give to all the rescues that come through my house. But for this gentleman – it had to be “just right”. January came and went and then came February…. And then came Sue and Kent Bruns. PERFECT! Sue and I had several conversations about Gunner and we agreed he was the one for them and their Vizsla, Sandy. After working out the logistics from northern Iowa, the Dinner Bell in Eagleville, Missouri became the point of rendezvous…. When Sue pulled up and hopped out – Gunner knew she was “his”. Others had pulled in/out and he paid no mind, but when Sue pulled up he sat up and checked her out through the window. We went through the normal passing of the dog chatter, the signing of the paperwork and then it was time to say goodbye. No problem for Gunner – “thanks and see ya later bye”…. He had a new mom now. Sue kept in regular touch with us with updates and photos. He was in love with them and they with him. Then came some coughing… In August he was diagnosed with blastomycosis, a very serious fungal issue that settled in his lungs. Not many dogs survive. He took multiple antibiotics. Some helped for a while and others not at all. He seemed to be making strides. Sue and I keeping in touch through texting. Maybe…. Gunner took a turn for the worse in September and the decision to let him go was made. He traveled to the Rainbow Bridge on September 23rd. It’s safe to say the best part of his life was the last few months with the Bruns. Thank you Sue and Kent for finally giving our boy his true home. Godspeed Gunner. We’ll see you at the bridge.

RILEY
9 year old Riley came to us in late May as an owner surrender. She is quite spunky and loves to snuggle....as most V's do! Early on she turned up one day with a golf ball sized mass in her upper lip. Given the summer season we first thought she may have been stung or bitten by some summer critter. Once the vet examined her it was determined she had not been bit but because of the location of the "mass" it needed to be removed and while she was under she had some other fatty tumors removed as well. This girl was a little bit of a frankenvizsla for a while but it didn't get her down and she healed well from that. Later in the summer, as she was transitioning foster homes, she started to show signs of being in heat. Not all that unusual except that she had been spayed many years prior!! After a months worth of tests and exams and a very light heat cycle it was determined that she had retained a very small portion of an ovary at the time she was spayed. She had been around two bitches in heat just prior to starting her cycle which is what we think caused her to have the heat cycle. She handled it very well and that was that. Well, that is, until she had a slightly sprained tail from clowning around with her foster siblings. The sprain was easily treated but the referred pain down to her mid tail (she had a full tail) bothered her and, as dogs will do, she licked it....and licked it...and licked it. This tail lesion has become Riley's biggest obstacle (even over her separation anxiety). She went through cold laser therapy treatments, wore every cone type apparatus in the book and was sedated for periods of time to allow her tail to heal. Although progress was made it was slow, slow, slow. In the midst of healing, the grand day came that she found her perfect people, Lori and Steve Kaufman! Not scared off by any of Riley's issues or her age, they have welcomed her into her forever home and we all feel blessed! She deserves it, as they all do! Unfortunately Riley's tail did not heal and had to be amputated above the sore leaving her with what looks like a common Vizsla length dock. She did very well during the procedure but the urge to lick is still very strong. The Kaufman's are working with Riley every day to see that her incision heals and that the drama of the tail can be left behind. What a Sweet Pea!
What IS a VIZ WHIZZ!!??
Midwest Vizsla Rescue has been, for the past two years or so, the grateful and lucky recipient of funds raised by two separate but similar events held "across the pond." Have you ever heard of a Viz Whizz? It isn't a dog show or a hunt test....no, a Viz Whizz is all about Vizzies whizzing about while their people mingle and share the love of the breed....and end up raising a good amount of money for various Vizsla rescue organizations. The London Viz Whiz was the first event that Midwest Vizsla Rescue was supported by. Attached below is a wonderful article written by Susanne Pope giving a true taste, pics included, of what is looks like to be at a Viz Whizz! Next, we were supported by yet another grand event, The Scottish Mega Whizz 2014, organized by Felicity Butters. We asked her to describe the event for us and have also included some pictures from the event! Looks like a vizzie wild time!!
"How do I describe the chaos of my Mega Whizz ? It started a long time ago in an effort to see my puppies growing up, a relaxed way of chatting over probs etc. It then grew legs as friends wanted to join in and got crazy !! Someone challenged me to host the biggest gathering of Vizzies ever - of course I have and for several years the numbers are growing Primarily it is about fun for Vizzies and owners but once you get folk together who love Vizzies, it is an ideal opportunity to raise funds for Vizzies in need. Nowadays, it has become a whole weekend and for others a whole week of fun. I organise drunken chaos on the Saturday night, food and pub quiz. Sunday is the official Whizz, starting with coffee and shortbread and waiting for our 'piper' to start the walk. This is a zooooom through the fabulous Carmichael Estate, an opportunity for doggies to 'dip' in the pond at Pond Cottage then on to Deer Park where they can socialise and zoom to their 'hearts content'. Meanwhile, back at base, we are BBQing like crazy to feed these hungry folk - venison, lamb, chicken, beef and pork, all raised on the estate, add to that fabulous salads, deserts - who could ask for more ? We have loads of stalls selling lovely things for Vizzies and owners. The highlight of the day is the auction, loads of stuff but autioned by our wonderful, hilarious auctioneer, Ryan McDonald who could sell sand to the Arabs !! In summing up, it is bloody hard work, I am now working on next years Whizz in an effort to ease the work. I try to put 'mahoosive' amounts of fun in which makes folk happy to spend money. So far this has worked. It gives me huge pleasure to be able to help Viz Rescue in any part of the world."-Felicity Butters
We are thankful for for all of the Vizsla peeps near and far who help us help the red heads of our hearts who need the support of rescue to get on to their best life!!! A heartfelt thanks to the London Viz Whizz and Scottish Mega Viz Whizz events and all of those who made it possible!!

WHY RESCUE?
At the time we publish this blog – we are waiting to see if someone claims this old boy. He was found hungry and scared on a boat dock in Sunrise Beach, Lake Ozark, Missouri. No one knows how long he’d been there. He’s in a shelter now, waiting for his owner to claim him (highly doubtful) or to be turned over to us. We’ve already given permission to move forward with heartworm testing. If he’s negative, he’ll be vetted and we’ll pick up this weekend. He was thought to be around 15yo, but we’re thinking around 11 – 12….. We have two families interested in this senior statesman from the great state of Missouri. We’re now calling him Senator and his next stop is to a groomer to be bathed and work on those nails…. Then we’ll see who will be the lucky family to get Senator for the last years of his life.
Many folks ask us how can you do rescue? Isn’t it hard? How do you give them up? The sad part of this is every dog that comes through Midwest Vizsla Rescue is a “ Senator”. No matter if they are a pup or an oldster, each one has a story to tell. Our job is to get them ready for their forever home. Some need to stay longer than others as they need more confidence and training. Others are truly pass through dogs and are just grateful and happy to be somewhere with someone who loves them. And every once in a while we have one that doesn’t make it (health or temperament) and the humane thing to do is to bless them and send them on to the bridge... THAT is what is hard on us… Yes, it’s hard to let them go after you’ve nursed and rehabbed a Vizsla, but there is no better feeling than knowing when you’ve made a great placement – a great love connection – between dog and owner…..
We’ve tried to keep our adoption fee the same as the last few years although our adoption donations do not cover all our expenses. As a 501, our insurance runs nearly $1,400 a year – which is nearly four adoptions! We appreciate your thinking of our redheads when making your end of year donations. You can send through our Paypal button or mail to the address below.
Again, thank you so much for helping us help the “Senators”, who through no fault of their own, end up in rescue.
